Week three of the Sedona Adult Summer Softball League, played on Thursday, June 15, saw the two remaining undefeated teams left in the league face off with first place up for grabs.

A Day in the West [4-0] maintained its undefeated record after it doubled up on Red Rocks Rotary [3-1] 16-8. Other results forced Rotary out of second place, and changes came in the standings all the way down to sixth place.

The most competitive game was Rokzoo Bucket List’s [3-1] 12-11 victory over Rough Country Pools & Spa [1-4].

Rokzoo led 2-1 after two, then managed the first big inning with the bats. It got enough of a cushion to keep Rough Country at bay, however barely.

In the top of the fourth, Rokzoo was a two-out nightmare for Rough Country, plating five runs.

In the bottom half of the inning Rough Country got to within two at 7-5 with some heads up baserunning and hard-hit balls to the outfield.

But Rokzoo continued its tear, hitting singles into the gaps left open by the Rough Country outfield. It scored five more runs for a 12-5 lead.

Rokzoo’s Don Bauder plated the 10th before Aaron Rodriguez batted in the 11th, and the 12th scored on a pop up that dropped in over Rough Country first baseman Kerry Richardson.

“If we catch two fly balls they score four or five less runs,” Richardson said. “Stuff back in high school that you would never think twice about tracking down. Props to them for being able to hit the spots.”

Rough Country almost completed a two-out comeback, scoring three runs with the top of its lineup at bat. But the game ended in a rundown.

“We tried to put [the ball] underneath and over the top,” said Rokzoo’s Matt Cushman.

Cushman added that defensively, they tried to skip the cutoff players to keep hold the Rough Country hits to singles rather than for extra bases.

While Rokzoo and Rough Country played on the upper field, Reddell Construction [3-2] won 6-0 against the Dirty Rats [2-3] on the lower field, but still fell from third to fourth place.

It went up 3-0 after three innings, and Bo Rodriguez made it 5-0 after the fourth before one more was added in the fifth.

“We played solid ‘D.’ The outfield was working, catching a lot of balls,” Reddell’s Mike Alvarez said. “We had good pitching … It let us do our job. A win is a win so we take them as they come.”

For the Dirty Rats, they were satisfied despite losing. They limited Reddell’s offense with solid outfield play as well.

“We’re happy because we held them,” Tommy Lopez said. “They blow people out so we’re happy to hold them to six. It was fun and it wasn’t a complete blowout.”

The Dirty Rats’ loss came after a 13-2 win against the L’Auberge Mighty Ducks [0-3]. Eric Dominguez, who celebrated his 28th birthday, hit a two-run single to make it 3-0 after the first. Dominguez collected two more RBI on a double in the third to extend the lead to 8-0.

L’Auberge’s Austin Zwart made it 8-2, and Dominguez got his fifth RBI in the fifth frame en route to the win.

“Today we got lucky, we put the ball where it should go, in the gaps,” Dominguez said.

Pagos [2-1] beat Rough Country 11-7. Pagos went up 11-0 before Rough Country chipped away, making it 11-3 and 11-6, but ran out of innings.

“It was a great game, they got off to a great start, but we fought hard to narrow their lead, which we consider respectable,” Rough Country’s Tammy Kelley said.

Rokzoo won 9-1 against ABC Body Shop [0-3] to solidify their second-place standing.

Although Rokzoo, Rotary and Reddell have three wins, Rokzoo’s larger run differential has them atop the three-way tie for second.
