A trio of Sedona Swordfish swimmers competed at the Arizona Swimming 2017 Junior Olympics Long Course Championships from Friday through Sunday, July 7 to 9, at Phoenix Swim Club’s facility, the Dady Aquatic Center at Phoenix Country Day School.

Jaxon Oles and Dezra Dana, in the 13 to 14 year old girls division, and Zach Dana, a 15 to 18 boys participant, competed against swimmers from around the state.

Zach Dana reached three A finals — he placed in the top eight during preliminaries for the event — and one B final.

He took second in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:59.26; fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke [1:23.43]; eighth in the
200-meter individual medley [2:51.38] and finished third of five in the 400-meter freestyle final [5:07.71], a timed final without a prelim.

He finished third in the B final of the 200-meter freestyle [2:21.18], too.

Dezra Dana reached one B final, taking fifth [13th overall] in the 200 breaststroke in 3:29.68. She also swam in the prelims for the 200 freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

Oles reached the B final in the 200 individual medley as well, and finished in sixth [15th overall] in 3:08.17. Her other events were the 50-meter freestyle, 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

To qualify for the meet, they had to have reached a minimum time standard throughout the season, but not one fast enough to qualify for the Long Course State Age Group Championship.

That meet begins Thursday, July 13, at the Brophy College Preparatory Aquatic Center in Phoenix and runs through Sunday, July 16.
