This Friday, Oct. 5, Sedona football will look to right the ship as the Scorpions travel to Phoenix to face Veritas Prep.
“I think Veritas Prep is well-coached and that they run a great scheme,” Sedona coach Tom Miller said. “They are also fundamentally sound so I think either team can win this matchup on Friday.”
The Scorpions are 2-4 this season — the same record as Veritas Prep.
Last week, Sedona traveled to Scottsdale Prep and lost a hard-fought match 34-33.
The running game has been the bread and butter for Sedona all season and the Scorpions were able to unleash it against Scottsdale Prep.
“Our reverses and toss sweeps were working well, but we need to get our option game going,” Miller said. “We found success on the perimeter last week and came away with a few big plays against Scottsdale Prep.”
Miller believes the Scorpions’ interior running game is crucial to Sedona unlocking its offensive potential.
“I came away impressed with our perimeter running game, but I would like to see more success in the interior,” Miller said. “We just have to execute better on interior plays, and that starts with our reads and splits,” Miller said.
After falling behind 14-0 to Scottsdale Prep, the Scorpions scored 21 points in the second quarter and tied the score at halftime.
“We felt like we let one slip away last week, even though we had a lot of opportunities,” Miller said. “The boys are hungry to avenge that loss, so practice has been more intense this week.”
Despite the loss, Miller believes the Scorpions have some positives to build on moving forward.
“I came away impressed with our offense’s big-play ability and was also pleased with how physical our defense is becoming.”
With only three games remaining, Miller believes that finishing strong is crucial for the Scorpions.
“It means everything for a young team’s confidence at the end of season,” Miller said. “Every time we go out there, I feel like we have a chance to win so finishing the year strong is very important.”
Sedona’s next home game is Friday, Oct. 12. when the Scorpions host the North Pointe Prep Falcons.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
