It was a tough night for Sedona volleyball as the Scorpions were swept in a hard-fought match against Northland Prep Academy.
“I told the team not to get upset at our first and third sets because of how hard they had fought,” Sedona coach Brenna Barker said. “I cannot complain about their effort in those two sets, but I was angry with their second set.”
With the loss, Sedona dropped to 6-8 this season.
Both teams came out firing in the first set as neither could pull away.
Sedona had a chance in the end, but Northland Prep would defeat the Scorpions 26-24 in the first set.
“Our first set was our best of the match, the girls came out with great energy and did not let up,” Barker said. “How we start is important to us, because it sets the tone for the rest of the game.”
Northland Prep won the second set more convincingly as the Spartans defeated Sedona 25-13.
With their backs against the wall, the Scorpions recaptured their intensity from the beginning in hopes of pushing the game to a fourth set.
The third set came down to the wire, but the Scorpions were unable to extend the game and lost 25-23 to Northland Prep.
While the Scorpions did not emerge victorious, Barker was pleased with outside hitter Morgan Fritz and middle blocker Jaden Fox.
“I was very proud of those two, because that was the best I have seen Morgan play, and Jaden worked her butt off in the middle,” Barker said.
Though the Scorpions came up short, Barker did come away pleased with a new lineup.
After moving right side hitter Kelsey Woellmer to libero last week, Barker moved setter Amari Sonn to libero and came away impressed.
“Amari is a great passer and it showed with how the offense executed, even if the result was the same,” Barker said.“The team flowed better on the court and I believe our overall passing was better.”
The lineup change moves Kelsey back to right side hitter and moves middle blocker Mary Westervelt to setter. Sedona’s next home game is Thursday Oct. 11, when the Scorpions host North Point Prep. The match begins at 6 p.m.
