Sedona football seeks balance against North Pointe Prep2 min read

This Friday, Oct. 12, Sedona football will look to get back on track as the Scorpions host North Pointe Prep.

The Scorpions are 2-5 this season and 0-2 in sectional play.

North Pointe Prep is 6-1 this year and is riding a four-game winning streak into Friday’s match.

“We are hosting a very good football team and we need to find ways to get an advantage,” Sedona coach Tom Miller said. “We will need a great all-around performance on Friday to beat North Pointe.”

Last week, the Scorpions lost at Veritas Prep 33-20.

Sedona looks to establish its power running game early against North Pointe on Friday.

“I was disappointed in our interior running game because it was not good enough last week,” Miller said. “We seem to be stuck in neutral and we are still working hard to fix that.”

Despite Sedona’s interior running woes, the Scorpions have been able to generate offense elsewhere.

“We have had some big plays on the perimeter and through the passing game, but we are trying to find a balance, “ Miller said. “ I am always one that believes you have to run the football and it starts with running more effectively between the tackles.”

Miller stressed finding an offensive balance and getting ahead on first down are keys to winning on Friday.

“Finding a balance is crucial because plays like play action passes do not work on second and 12,” Miller said. “We have to consistently get four or more yards on first down so that our offense can function at its highest level.”

Miller also believes the team is taking better care of the football, though there is still room for improvement.

“Each of the last two weeks we have thrown a pick-six but overall the numbers favor us,” Miller said. “ We are winning the turnover battle but giving the other team points is an issue.”

“We are stepping up our physicality on defense which all starts with the defensive line,” Miller said. “ The linebackers cannot make plays if the defensive line is not slowing down blockers so we preach gap alignment to help them move freely.”

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
