Sedona volleyball put on a dominant performance on Thursday, October. 9. against North Pointe Prep as the Scorpions swept the Falcons in three sets.

“The girls were hustling and had great energy the whole game,” Sedona coach Brenna Barker said. “I thought they played happy, confident and wanted to win tonight more than anything.”

The win was Sedona’s second consecutive win as the Scorpions defeated Camp Verde on Tuesday, October. 7. three sets to two.

“I think beating Camp Verde helped us click as a team and gave us more confidence heading into the North Pointe game,” Barker said.

Sedona also swept the season series against North Pointe as the Scorpions defeated them three sets to zero on Tuesday, September. 18.

Sedona started the game hot as the Scorpions took an early 8-2 lead over North Pointe.

North Pointe could not overcome its early hole as Sedona led the entire first set.

The Scorpions defeated North Pointe 25-20 in the first set.

North Pointe came out stronger in the second set and tied Sedona 8-8 early on. Sedona responded with a quick run to take a 13-8 lead over North Pointe.

The Scorpions would not relinquish their led and went on to win the second set 25-18.

Sedona came out slow in the third set and trailed North Pointe 2-0 in the beginning.

The third set turned into a back-and-forth affair as both teams were knotted up at 14 after Sedona’s sluggish start.

Sedona would go on an 11-1 run to win the set 25-15 and win the match.

Barker’s reserve players saw more playing time on Thursday to gain more varsity-level experience.

“I was definitely trying to give my backup players more minutes so they are ready if anyone gets hurt,” Barker said. “ They will also be much more comfortable if called upon later on.”

Barker played multiple lineups against North Pointe including starting freshman Stephanie Medel at setter.

“Stephanie had a great game, starting a freshman is setter is asking a lot from a player,” Barker said. “ It is basically like having your freshman start at quarterback and she took on the challenge and played really well.”

While the Scorpions played a lot of young players on Thursday, Sedona’s usual suspects put on a solid performance as well.

“Morgan Fritz is just great, she is hitting the ball so hard and Jaden Fox is always consistent on the court,” Barker said. “Kelsey Woellmer played great as always, she is a great passer so I was very confident with her at libero and she played her butt off.”

Sedona’s last home game of the regular season is Thursday, October. 18. as the Scorpions host Valley Lutheran.

The match begins at 6 p.m.

Valley Lutheran won the previous matchup between these two teams on Tuesday, September. 18. when the Flames defeated the Scorpions in three sets.

Thursday is also Sedona’s senior night as the Scorpions celebrate Abby Stevenson and Kelsey Woellmer.

Kelsey lettered on Sedona’s varisty team for three years while Abby spent two years on varsity.
