Friday, Oct. 19, Sedona football hosts Valley Lutheran in what is the Scorpions final home game of the year.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
“Valley Lutheran’s skill guys have good speed so we have to make sure we contain them on the outside,” Sedona coach Tom Miller said. “I think the game will come down to who can control the line of scrimmage and limit big plays.”
The Scorpions are 2-6 on the season and 0-3 in conference play. Valley Lutheran comes into this matchup at 1-7 this season.
Sedona is on a three-game losing streak including a 56-14 loss to North Pointe Prep on Oct. 12.
The Scorpions offense is currently averaging 20 points per game but has yet to top that mark in October.
Turnovers plagued the Scorpions as Sedona turned the ball over three times in their own territory.
“You are just asking for trouble when you give a good team like North Pointe great field position throughout the game,” Miller said. “You give a really good team an easy time doing that and a team you are competitive with a competitive edge by turning the ball over.
Despite the loss, Miller believes there were some positives from last week’s outcome.
“Even though we were not that competitive for parts of the game, we were working hard on the field,” Miller said. “We may have lost, but the hustle and effort was good on our end.”
Miller believes setting the tone physically on defense is key to Sedona coming out on top Friday.
“Attacking the line of scrimmage and getting people behind the chains will be crucial,” Miller said. “Having the opportunity to bring pressure on third down should bode well for us.”
Friday is also senior night for Sedona as the Scorpions class of 2019 gets one more opportunity to play in front of their fans.
“Obviously it will be senior citizen night for me but for them to win their last home game is important to us,” Miller said. “I do not care what night it is, any time we play it is an important match and we need a win.”
Miller spoke highly of his senior class for their leadership towards the younger players.
“This senior class showcased a strong work ethic to the younger players, they are familiar with the schemes so they can assist and teach when needed,” Miller said. “Trevor Stovall has gotten better every year, Brennan Hutton is finishing strong and Connor Knuth had a good game last week.”
Miller believes getting ahead in the chains is key to unlocking Sedona’s offensive potential.
“Being able to dictate when in and what plays we run is our key to the game,” Miller said. “Instead of having to throw the ball, we want to control what plays we call.”
Sedona’s last senior night victory came in 2016 when the Scorpions defeated Tonopah Valley 7-6.
Sedona ends their season next Friday, Oct. 26, when the Scorpions travel to Wellton to take on Antelope High School.
