Sedona football ends year at 3-73 min read

Sedona lost to Antelope Union High School 20-0 on Friday, Oct. 26, to end their regular season at 3-7.

“I did not feel good about how we ended the season and I think we could have done more this year.” Sedona coach Tom Miller said.

The Scorpions’ three wins were the most for Sedona since 2015, when Sedona went 7-3 in the regular season.

“We are trending upwards but in no way am I satisfied with this season’s outcome,” Miller said. “I am not patting myself on the back because we did not have a successful year.”

Last year, the Scorpions finished their regular season 0-10.

This season, the Scorpions offense averaged 21.4 points per game and topped 40 points twice in wins over Rock Point and Valley Lutheran.

Sedona’s 49-32 win over Valley Lutheran was the most points the Scorpions have scored in a win since beating Mohave Accelerated 55-0 in 2016.

For Miller, beating Sedona’s rival in Camp Verde 14-0 was the Scorpions best win this season.

“It is hard to top pitching a shutout in a rivalry game,” Miller said. “This year was an up and down year, but beating the Cowboys at home was definitely a highlight.”

The Scorpions defense would not be denied that game, as Sedona held Camp Verde to 177 total yards and intercepted the Cowboys once.

Sedona running back Jackson Coughlin had two touchdowns against Camp Verde including a 73-yard touchdown catch from Jake Brown.

After wrapping up his second season as head coach, Miller is ready to return for year three.

“I am still wrapping up and evaluating our personnel and the things we did well and need to improve on,” Miller said. “Then I am interviewing all the returning players to get feedback from them and give them individual goals.”

The football players not involved in winter sports will take a month off then return in December for offseason workouts.

“With a lot of our athletes being so small, many of them are playing basketball and soccer in the winter,” Miller said. “There are not a lot of idle football players but the ones not in winter sports will get busy next month.”

Miller wants the Scorpions to improve their strength and become more responsible for the 2019 season.

“We need to commit to the weight room this offseason as well as becoming more accountable,” Miller said. “Behavioral issues are something we have had to constantly address and they have not been up to our standards at times.”

While the Scorpions lose many key players to graduation, Sedona still has solid returners for next season.

“There are always surprises, but Jackson Coughlin, Micah Johnson and Joey Johnson figure to be impact players next season,” Miller said. “We also have some young players that I am excited about so we have a lot of potential for next season.”

The Scorpions will kick off their 2019 regular season on Friday, Aug. 23, and the opponent is to be determined.

Winter sports kick off for Sedona this month as Sedona boys’ basketball tips off Friday, Nov, 30, when the Scorpions host the Prescott Badgers.
