RunSedona marathon event returns on Feb. 23 min read

With many New Year’s resolutions already slipping away, RunSedona might be the event needed to get back on track.

On Saturday, Feb. 2, the 14th annual RunSedona kicks off with the half-marathon starting at 8 a.m., the 10K starting at 8:10 and the 5K occurring at 8:20.
Last year, RunSedona accumulated $3.3 million in direct spending from 3,000 contributors.

Sedona Chamber of Commerce Director of Communications Kegn Moorcroft spoke about precautions that people should take before participating and tackled some FAQs.

What things should people do to prepare?Train and practice on hills. This course is not flat and running on a treadmill will not accurately prepare you for any of the three courses. If you are coming in from out of town, plan on arriving a few days early to acclimate to the 4,500-foot elevation. The course maps are available at SedonaMarathon.com/Course-Maps.

Are there any common injuries that occur during 5K and 10K runs?
Muscle soreness and dehydration have occurred. There are aid stations every 2 miles so take advantage of the great hydration and nutrition options along the way.

Where does the money generated by RunSedona go?
The event is produced by Bluewolf Event Productions by Race Director Jeffery Frost. The event is positioned not to be a money-maker but as an economic generator in a historically slow season.

What makes RunSedona so popular?
This event is consistent and organized year after year. We’ve come to expect cheerful volunteers, Jeanie Carroll singing the National Anthem, the mayor giving a warm welcome and stunning scenery. It’s always fun, invigorating, competitive
and there is plenty of support along the way.

Is there a monetary goal for this year’s RunSedona?
There is not a monetary goal; however, there is a goal to have 3,000 registrants ready to run on Feb. 2.

What is your favorite aspect of RunSedona?
The gorgeous course makes me fall in love with Sedona all over again. The event brings happy locals and visitors together, cheering each other on, supporting each other and achieving their goals together. The entire event is positive and beautiful on so many different levels.

Since Sedona’s elevation is 4,500 feet, what precautions should runners take?
Training and hydration are key. Locals will be fine but visitors should arrive early to acclimate and run the course. The expo will be equipped with the Verde Valley’s best running vendors so any equipment needed will be available.

Will the weather have any effect over the race?
The race will go on no matter the weather. Rain or shine, it’s time to run.

Area residents are encouraged to conduct traffic-related activities before or after the scheduled delays and road closure.

Sedona Police officers and Sedona Fire District personnel will be available throughout the area to assist with any emergency needs or service requests. Access to the Sedona Medical Center is always maintained.

Prices are $55 for the 5K, $65 for the 10K and $75 for the half-marathon and will increase as of Thursday, Jan. 31.

For participating kids under 12 years old, the 5K price is $20 but will go up on Jan. 31 as well.
Pricing does not include the mandatory sign-up fee.

Upon payment, entry fees are non-refundable, non-transferable and non-exchangeable under any circumstances.
