Healthy World Sedona, in cooperation with the Sustainability Alliance, recently announced a community-based project to help save the Earth’s natural resources during the month of April.
Plants for the Planet encourages residents of Sedona, the Verde Valley and beyond to pledge one or more days during the month when they will consume only plant-based foods: No meat, fish, dairy or eggs. Each day a person does so will save 1,100 gallons of water and 45 pounds of grain, will spare 30 square feet of forest from being leveled, will keep the equivalent of 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and will spare one animal’s life.
There is no cost to participate. Anyone can do so online by visiting HealthyWorldSedona.com and completing some basic information along with the number of days they pledge to eat plant-based during April. The page also contains additional information about the positive impact of each pledge, a daily updated “thermometer” to show the total community commitment and links to recipes and other tips to make it easy and fun to participate. The goal for the campaign is 6,000 or more days pledged for the month of April.
The Plants for the Planet pledge drive was created at the encouragement of the Sustainability Alliance, which maintains a listing and interactive map of events by local organizations and businesses celebrating Earth Day each year. This year, the actual day is Monday, April 22, but there will be dozens of activities throughout the month, all of which can be accessed through the Alliance’s page at VVEarthDay. com.
“As a core member of the local Sustainability Alliance, we wanted to come up with an ‘Earth Month’ event that people could join in not just for a day but throughout the entire month,” HWS co-founder Bev Bow said. “And we hope that Plants for the Planet will educate and inspire those who participate to continue this earth-healthy practice in the future as well.”
HWS co-founder Don Fries said, “While we’re all helping planet Earth in a positive way, we’re also helping ourselves, because a plant-based diet is healthier. It’s a great way to do good and feel good at the same time.”
