Museum of Northern Arizona offers appraisals of artifacts on April 62 min read

The Museum of Northern Arizona Sedona Muses’ annual appraisal day will be held Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the Sedona United Methodist Church, 110 Indian Cliffs Road.

It’s not the Antique Roadshow, but the next best, as locals can discover their treasures by professional appraisers, who educate and evaluate Southwest Native American art and cowboy art and trappings. The appraisers are volunteers and are not giving formal appraisals but provide an estimate of what similar items may be worth at retail or fair market value.

Last year’s attendees were most impressed with the information they received about their items and found that as valuable as the estimated value.

This is the second year for this event which is a fundraiser for educational opportunities and programs presented by the Museum of Northern Arizona and the Sedona Muses in the Flagstaff/Sedona area and the Verde Valley. This year’s professionals are not only local appraisers but also come from Santa Fe, N.M., Tucson, Phoenix and Prescott.

Those attending include: Mark Bahti, Bahti Indian Arts; Steve and Antoinette Beiser, Puchteca Indian Goods; Charles King, King Galleries; Corinne Cain, The Savvy Collector; Joan Caballero, Joan Caballero Appraisals; Cindy De Angelis, MNA Museum Shop; Jell Ogg, Ogg’s Hogan, and Carol Watters, Hoel’s Indian Shop.

Attendees may bring up to five items. Appraisal costs are $30 for the first item, $25 for the second item and $20 each for three to five items.

MNA members are discounted $5 per item and attendees may become members at the door and receive the discount. Cash, check and credit cards are accepted. No spectators, please, as evaluations are private. No artifacts or weapons are allowed.

Staff from the MNA collections department will have information on the care and preservation of family heirlooms and works of art. Information on where and how to get a certified appraisal will also be available.
