Golf improves to 7-1 after beating Camp Verde, Flagstaff3 min read

The Scorpions golf team is heating up.

On Thursday, April 4, the Scorpions improved to 7-1 after scoring a 226, defeating Camp Verde [247] and BASIS Flagstaff [283].

Freshman Gavin Bruce placed first at 11 over par, while Cameron Stewart finished third at 22 over.

Scorpions coach Mike Webster spoke on Sedona’s success and how the team can finish the season on a high note.
 How does 7-1 feel?

I did not expect that result outside of this season. However, I am very happy that we are 7-1. The kids are happy as well, and I believe they are proud of our current record.

How did the Scorpions fare in their last match?
Basis Flagstaff and Camp Verde have young teams like we do. We were able to pull out a win. Playing golfers similar in age was great for their confidence and it showed last week. We are about the same experience level as most kids right now, so we are not facing teams that blow us away. We are not facing teams with a golfer that shoots one over par while our golfers shoot 18-over.

What are your expectations at Camp Verde?
We should be able to beat Camp Verde and Basis but this is the first time we are facing Wickenburg this season. In year’s past, they have always fielded a solid team, so it will be interesting
to see how they perform on Tuesday. Our first three matches were at Agave Highlands and the course is currently in great condition.
Since this is our fourth time at the course, the players should improve from their first three matches. I expect us to have some very low scores compared to other rounds we have had there.

What is the toughest aspect of Agave Highlands?
There is a lot of out-of-bounds at Agave, as well as desertscape areas. There are no sand traps on this course, which makes the course a little easier for our players.

How have Cameron and Gavin fared recently?
Those two have kind of been up-and-down as of late. Their swings look great, but sometimes they will hit every fairway but miss the greens. It is kind of back-and-forth but we just need to tie it all together in one match.

How has the improved weather impacted practice?
It is so much nicer now compared to when we were fighting the rain and snow in February. The kids are actually
able to get a full practice in, which is great. I think the team has improved on its nerves and really gelled as a team. Our team is much more composed heading into their sixth match.

Do you anticipate any players qualifying for state?
Possibly Gavin, depending on how the next few matches go. We are halfway through our season, so if Gavin improves by about four shots, then he should qualify.

How would you grade the team at the halfway point?
I think we have progressed well this year. Our record shows that we are 7-1, which we are very proud of. I believe we have gone from some very inexperienced golfers to ones with nice swings. They can progress the ball and really play a golf course now.

How challenging has the season been for you?
I do not think it has been too challenging this year. I love coaching the kids and I love seeing their progress. Seeing their confidence grow in the game and outside the game has been tremendous. I love witnessing it every year.

What has been your favorite moment this season?
Coming off the course at 7-1 has been a great moment for us. One of the funnier moments was with Ty Jackson. He tried to hit a ball out of a hazard rather than accepting a penalty stroke and taking a drop. He tried to hit it out and ended up with mud and muck all over himself.
The Scorpions regular season ends on Tuesday, April 30, when Sedona tees off at Elephant Rocks Golf Course.

Williams High School is the host.
