Scorpions golf ends regular season3 min read

Golf is one of the most difficult sports to participate in, but do not tell that to the young Scorpions on the course.

The Scorpions wrapped up the regular season with a 13-4 record. “To be honest, I did not think we would have a winning record at the beginning of the season,” Sedona coach Mike Webster said. “However, the players really worked hard this season and pulled off yet another winning season for the golf team.”

Webster lauded the Scorpions for their  work-ethic and desire to improve over the course of this season.

“The kids want to win so they have worked extraordinarily hard to get to where we are in this season,” Webster.  “It just goes to show that our golf program being the winningest program in school history motivates our players to succeed.”

On Tuesday, April. 30, the Scorpions won a team third-place trophy out of  nine schools at regionals at Elephant Rocks in Williams.

“It was the first time our kids had ever seen this course so they were going in blind on Tuesday,” Webster said. “However, they played the course to their abilities and I think a little bit beyond that in a few ways.”

For the Scorpions, coming in third was a sign of the growth Sedona has shown since February.

“I think their performance on Tuesday was extraordinary,” Webster said. “The weather conditions included gusts at up to 25 miles per hour but that did not stop them at Elephant Rocks.”

“This team for some reason seems to play well in the wind and cold, which is pretty unusual.”

Freshman Cameron Stewart finished in second place and sophomore Gavin Bruce placed 4th individually out of 48 participants.

“Stewart shot one over 37 on the back nine, which is a great accomplishment  for him,” Webster said. “This was his first time shooting in the 30s so hopefully he can build off this performance.” “Bruce taking fourth was a great accomplishment and we are happy for him.”

After a spectacular freshman campaign, Bruce followed up by qualifying for state as a sophomore.

“I am especially proud of Bruce for qualifying this year as an individual,” Webster said. “I think his experience going to state this year will not only carry him but the team to new levels in the years to come.” “It is going to be nice seeing Bruce at state and hopefully he can keep up his solid play,” he added.

Since the Scorpions’ regular season has passed, Bruce must prepare for state on his own.

“If Gavin can improve his putting and short game, he has a great opportunity ahead of him,” Webster said. “His driving and hitting greens have come along this season, so it just working on the short game.”

Despite setbacks such as match cancellations and inclement weather, Bruce has shown tremendous strides this season.

“Gavin actually played a few events over the summer which helped him prepare for this season,” Webster said. “He has been extremely focused on golf and matured a lot this season.”

As the Scorpions plan on playing in multiple events this summer, Webster is excited for Sedona’s future.

“We are still the winningest sport at Sedona Red Rock High School in its entire history and we are plan on keeping it that way,” Webster said. “We are getting the players involved with summer tournaments and meeting once a week, if time allows, to practice unofficially.”

Heading into next season, most of the Scorpions roster is already in tact. “We are a very young team, we had three freshman and two Sophomores this year and look great for the years to come,” Webster said.

Webster believes the Scorpions should be in the mix next season in regards to top golf programs.

“This group of players are passionate about the game of golf and will be strong contenders for state next season,” Webster said. “Both coach Dennis Mobley and I are very excited for the years ahead.”

Last year, Sedona took third place in Division III.
