ADOT road work affects various routes3 min read

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers in Northern Arizona to plan for delays at multiple locations while crews apply a fog-seal that will help extend the life of the pavement on several highways.

Crews began work Wednesday, May 15, at various locations on state highways in Northern Arizona to perform the roadway maintenance work that is scheduled to last six weeks. At locations with two lanes in each direction, crews will narrow the roadway to one lane in either or both directions. At locations with one lane in each direction, traffic will be narrowed to one lane only and pilot cars will guide traffic through the work zone.

Work is scheduled on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, and from 5 a.m. to noon Fridays. No work will occur on weekends or holidays.

The various locations are:

  • State Route 87: South of Payson, between milepost 231 and 242, and south of Winslow, between milepost 322 and 330.
  • State Route 260: Payson, between milepost 252 and 263; leaving Payson towards Heber, between milepost 269 and 283; Eager, between milepost 385 and 399.
  • Interstate 40: East of Holbrook, between milepost 290 and 297 and between milepost 303 and 319; west of Williams, between milepost 152 and 157; east of Flagstaff, between milepost 217 and 220; east of Winslow, between milepost 259 and 268.
  • Interstate 17: North of Camp Verde, between milepost 293 and 312
  • US 89A: This work will occur at night between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sedona, between milepost 370 and 375.
  • US 89: South of Page, between milepost 517 and 533.

Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment.

More closures scheduled on I-40

Northern Arizona drivers who use Interstate 40 are advised to plan for travel delays as crews return to complete paving, bridge and intersection work between Parks and Williams.

The following Interstate 40 ramp closures and detours are scheduled:

n Thursday, May 16, through Wednesday, May 22, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., crews will close the westbound I-40 off-ramp at Grand Canyon Boulevard. The detour for westbound I- 40 traffic accessing Williams will exit at Country Club Boulevard, exit 161, and enter eastbound I-40 to exit at Grand Canyon Boulevard.

n Tuesday, May 28, through Tuesday, June 4, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., crews will close the westbound I-40 on-ramp at Grand Canyon Boulevard. The detour for southbound traffic will use westbound historic Route 66 and enter westbound I-40 at Country Club Boulevard, exit 161.

The eastbound and westbound I-40 ramps at Grand Canyon Boulevard will not be closed at the same time or over Memorial Day weekend.

In early summer, crews will put down new asphalt on 17 miles of I-40 in both directions between Parks and Williams. The project also includes a final layer of asphalt as well as installation of guardrail, striping and signage. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2019.

Motorists should allow extra travel time and plan for possible delays while work is underway. Visit azdot.gov/projects for more information.
