In consideration of recent storms that have brought much appreciated moisture to the region, and with the recognition that these storms have also created a number of days where wind speeds restricted opportunities for area residents to conduct open burning, the fire chiefs of Verde Valley, Sedona and Copper Canyon Fire and Medical Districts, as well as the Cottonwood and Jerome Fire Departments have conferred and agreed to extend the Spring 2019 open burning season until 4 p.m. Sunday, June 16.
The spring 2019 season was scheduled to end May 31, but current cooler temperatures and favorable fuel conditions have created this unique opportunity to allow area residents to take advantage of these conditions with this extended open burning season.
It is hoped that individuals will use this extended opportunity to conduct additional clean-up efforts around their residences and properties and remove and burn unwanted brush, limbs, leaves and other natural organic materials to improve their properties ability to withstand a wildfire. Visit nfpa.org for tips on preparing a home to withstand a wildfire.
Residents are reminded that burn permits are required to conduct open burning by each jurisdiction, and these permits can be obtained at residents’ local fire station. Each permit will provide the bearer with the regulations related to open burning. Some jurisdictions may restrict burning on Sundays.
This additional period of burning is being subject to closure prior to the date outlined above, if conditions significantly deteriorate which would increase the potential for fires to escape and become larger. As always, the public is encouraged to exercise extreme care when conducting open burning, but particularly during this period when temperatures are increasing and the grasses cure with the onset of summer.
Anyone with questions regarding this extension, or about open burning in general is asked to contact their local fire agency.
