With the goal of raising money for the athletic program at Sedona Red Rock High School, the school’s golf coach, Mike Webster, and Jason Bruce, father of No. 1 player Gavin Bruce, are putting on the Chip-In Charity Golf Tournament.
The event will be held on Sunday, Aug. 25 at Oakcreek Country Club with a 1:30 p.m. start.
A lack of funding in recent years has caused schools around the country to cut certain sports, or even entire athletic programs, in recent years. The Scorpions golf program has seen that first hand. Last season, which was Webster’s seventh, they had only five players come out and had to refrain from playing in certain tournaments. That inspired this fundraiser.
“Some schools have to end up cutting kids who came out,” said Webster. “We already have at least seven for this year, but we’re the opposite. We still need money for things like bags, balls, shirts, and entry fees.”
Anyone playing will have an opportunity to win a number of prizes. Additionally, there will be a Burger Bar after. That will feature a silent auction and a chance to win prizes in a raffle. Webster and Bruce are roughly halfway to their goal of 80 players, or 20 teams for the charity tournament.
Beyond golfers, they are also looking for businesses or private sponsors. Sponsors donating $100 for pars, $150 for birdies, and $250 for eagles will have their company or family name in a sign on the tee box.
While there is no deadline for sponsors, the deadline for anyone looking to play is Aug, 12. The cost to play is $45 for members of Oakcreek and $95 for nonmembers.
Anyone looking to play or become a sponsor should contact Bruce at 856-0774 or thebruces99@msn.com.
