In an effort to raise money for the athletic program at Sedona Red Rock High School, the Chip In Golf Tourna-ment is returning in September. This year’s tournament will be held at Oakcreek Country Club on Saturday, Sept. 13. It starts at 8 a.m.

A year ago, the tournament was held as a way to raise money for the SRRHS golf team. Funds for this year’s tournament will be raised for the entire Scorpions athletic program.

“Please allow me to take this opportunity to thank you for your participation in the Chip In for Charity Golf Tournament last August. Your contribution made it possible to build a golf team this year,” tournament organizer Mike Webster said in a press release. “However, due to budget cuts to all athletics at SRRHS, it is imperative to protect these programs now or risk compete termination of these sports. Your contribution will help provide the sports teams with much needed funds for equipment and fees.”

The tournament will have a shotgun start and be in scramble format with four-person teams. The buy-in for the event is $100 for the public or $50 for members of Oakcreek Country Club. Following the round, there will also be a luncheon featuring a raffle and silent auction. One of the prizes is a trip for two. Additionally, prizes will be given out for a number of golfing accomplishments.

In addition to looking for teams and golfers, Webster is also looking for people and businesses to sponsor holes. That will come with a sign bearing the sponsoring family or business name on the tee box.

Webster also stressed the importance of team sports for high school kids in his press release.

“Team sports help teach adolescents accountability, dedication,
leadership and other skills,” he said. “Sports require memorization, repetition and learning — skillsets that are directly relevant to class work. The determination and goal-setting skills a sport requires can be transferred to the classroom.

Fighting for a common goal with a group of players and coaches teaches how to build teamwork and effectively communicate to solve problems.”
Anyone interested in playing and/or sponsoring a hole should contact Webster via phone at 239-0023 or email at Mike@Mexidona.com.
