Sedona Police Cadets participated at the Chandler Tactical Competition on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 14 to 15, against 50 teams supported by 43 law enforcement agencies in seven states.
The cadets are advised by Sedona Police Officer Catherine Beers and SPD School Resource Officer Michael Lucas.
Sedona’s eight cadets included Sgt. Adrian Javey, Hunter White, Alexandro Molina, Krystal Diaz-Lopez, Emmanuel Sanchez, Ari Tedrick, Ryan Pfaff and Yvan Maurouzel, who competed in the Sniper Challenge, Tactical Emergency Medical Support, Terrorist Takeover, Crisis Negotiations, Narcotics Raid, Pistol Shoot, Virtra Decision Shoot, Vertical Assault and Bungee challenges.
Javey won the fifth place trophy for the Bungee Challenge, which he called a “one-man ‘running-tug-of-war’ as a fitness challenge.”
The cadets are judged on a number of criteria, including the pace and speed of competition; overall plan and execution of mission, including
contingency plans; safety, muzzle control and use of cover and concealment when using mock firearms; time to complete event; communication and teamwork between group members; identification of threats or threat areas; actions taken against threats; decision making; command presence; and leadership
“We were only able to take home one trophy this year,” Beers said. “However, we brought back a lot of lessons, knowledge and experiences. I’m very proud of our group and I’m looking forward to see how they use this experience to develop into an even stronger, more effective team.”
The events are chosen and assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis by registration time, Beers said. “Our three strongest events, Officer Down, 5-Man Hostage Rescue Team and High Risk Vehicle Stops, were not something we got to participate in this year.
“We’ve got to continue training and get signed up earlier next year,” Beers said.
The Cadet organization is not an agency or a city-funded program.
“We are able to continue training and competing because of generous donations. A special thank you to Pink Jeep Tours for providing us with transportation,” Beers said, adding, “We are in need of some new gear and funds for future competitions”
