The Sedona-Oak Creek School District will host an information night on Monday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m., for the parents of the district’s English Language Learners at Sedona Red Rock High School.

“The objective of ELL Parent Night is to engage with families to strengthen our relationships and provide communication about educational rights, program resources, and intended progress for their students,” SRRHS Principal Heather Isom said. English Language Development teacher Angela Reyes “will present information and we will answer questions. Topics will also include attendance, compensatory instruction for English-proficient students and tutoring resources.”

Approximately 27% of the 706 students enrolled in the district as of Jan. 7 are eligible for English Language Development services. This includes 99 students at West Sedona School and 93 students at Sedona Red Rock High School.

Isom said that the school will be offering this event to parents at the start of each semester, and that the district will be bringing back free English language classes for SOCSD parents every Monday starting on Monday, Feb. 3, at 5 p.m.

Between 25 and 30 parents attended each of the previous classes over several months.

Isom said that SOCSD is also gathering feedback from ELL families to better understand their needs and preferences for their child’s education and will distribute a questionnaire at the upcoming parent information session.
