The Sedona Red Rock High School varsity track and field season began at Notre Dame Preparatory High School in Scottsdale on Wednesday, March 5, and was followed by the first of two home meets on Wednesday, March 12.

“We lost 17 seniors this year, so individual events are probably where we’ll see a lot of more success this year,” Head Coach Sean Eicher said. “This year, we’re really hitting the weight room a lot more. Previously we were getting in there maybe once or twice a week. We’ve been weight training about two to three times a week since the start of the season, and we’re going to continue with that. We can do a lot of work out on the track and build our endurance and our speed. But we also want to work on our strength, which will get us faster as well, and that’s been a big project this year.”

The girls’ team captain for the 2025 season is senior Sierra Williams, who previously captained the volleyball team.

“Sierra’s main focus this year is long jump and the 100 and 200 [meters],” Eicher said. “Last year, the year before, she made finals. Her goal this year is to medal and make the top four. She had a bad ankle last year, so she did okay, but not where she wanted to be … Sierra has been with me for four years, so she knows how much hard work I ask, and she always is willing to do it.”

Williams took third place in the long jump at Notre Dame Prep with a distance of 4.48 meters. Junior Aubrie Doyle came in fifth in the 1600 meters with a time of 6:11.20 and sophomore

Avery Raczynski came in 16th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.30 seconds.

“[Raczynski’s] main events are the 200- and 100-meter run, and then she will also be in our four-by-one when we do that relay,” Eicher said. “But her main event is going to be the 200-meter; that’s where she’s found a lot of success. As a freshman, she actually made it to state in that, which is rare … so her goal again this year should be top eight.”

Raczynski’s personal record in the 100 meters is 14.29 seconds, and she said that she is working to shave more time off that this season.

“I want to get a gold medal this year, so first place in the 100 or 200,” Raczynski said. “The team’s a little smaller this year, but I think everyone for the first week has improved a lot already.

Doyle said that she will be focusing on the 800 and 1,600 meter distances, aiming to qualify for state and hit a time around 5:30 for the 1,600-meter distance. Her personal records for those events are 2:43 and 5:51, respectively.

“A lot of people are doing really good this year just at this last meet, a lot of people either matched or came close to their personal records, which is really good for the first meet,” Doyle said.

The Scorpions’ next home meet will be the Sedona Invitational scheduled for Saturday, April 5, at 9 a.m.
