The city of Sedona Parks and Recreation Department installed a self-service kiosk in December to allow park visitors to rent cornhole bags, mini-golf putters with balls and ping-pong paddles and balls for $5 per hour at Ranger Station Park.

Visitors require a smartphone with QR code functionality to access the lockers, which are located on the south side of the park. There is no reservation system for the rental equipment, which is available seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.

“Whether people rent or bring their own equipment, it’s a fun thing to come do in the park and bring the family, or to meet others and putt around a little bit, play some ping-pong, and it’s just a fun no registration required, easy social activity when you want to come hang out and have a nice day in the park,” Sedona Parks and Recreation Manager Josh Frewin said.

The kiosk is operated by a company called Rent.fun, which was previously a kayak rental firm. Frewin said that this is only the firm’s second equipment rental kiosk, after one in Wichita, Kansas. The kiosk cost $2,000.50 to install, while the fees collected are split between the city and Rent.fun.

“We wanted to add some fun amenities that encourage socializing and hanging out, so we looked into what other places have done,” Frewin said. “The feedback so far has been great, and it’s been exciting to see people using the park and enjoying these new features.”

The city also held a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony for the playground at the park on Monday, March 17, with about 40 people present.

“We wanted Ranger Station Park to be a place for the whole family and community, with something for everyone,” Frewin said. “We have two buildings that, hopefully within the next year, will be available as rental facilities for events. Anyone will be able to rent them for their group, club, or organization and use the park to complement their activities. There’s a variety of features: The playground for kids, a grassy area for anyone to enjoy and an adult fitness station for those who want to work out while the kids play. There’s also a walking path around the park.”

Frewin said that a new shade structure similar to the park ramada at Posse Grounds and Sunset parks will be installed near the playground area during the coming year, with the rangers’ house and barn expected to be available for rental by late fall 2025.
