Two Scorpions strike gold at state championships1 min read

Senior Andre Davis and sophomore Hannah Ringel each brought home a gold medal to highlight two top-15 finishes for the Sedona Red Rock High School track and field teams at the Division III state championships.

Davis won the 110-meter hurdles championship and Ringel the shot put.

“Two gold medals is pretty good,” head track and field coach Harry Schneider said. “Hannah was the highlight.”

Although her throw of 39 feet, 4¼ inches was five inches short of the personal best of rival Viola Logston, a senior at Camp Verde High School, it was over a foot longer than Logston at State and sixth-best in Arizona overall.

“She’s very proud of that,” Schneider said. “She gets embarrassed easily [and] doesn’t like to talk much. But it’s part of my job to embarrass her — praise her, even.

“When she got up on the awards podium, she tried not to, but couldn’t help but smile.”

Davis overcame finishing two-tenths of a second behind fellow senior Chai Voccola in the preliminary rounds and a “poor job in the intermediate” hurdles, Schneider said. “He was leading at the fifth hurdle, but just faded.”

The girls were hurt by the loss of senior sprinter Tia Myers, anchor for three relay teams, who hurt her back
May 8 and was unable to participate in the finals of any of her events.
