Sedona Red Rock High School’s softball team suffered a 20-0 run-rule loss to Verde Valley rival Camp Verde High School in five innings on Friday, March 31.
The visiting Cowboys, No. 4 in Conference 2A, had three pitchers combine to throw a one-hitter against the Scorpions [2-6, 1-2 Central], who gave up 14 runs in the first two innings.
“I just felt like we didn’t give the kind of effort we should give in a game like that,” Scorpions head coach Ethan Hartz said.
Six runs in the first inning set the tone for the rest of the Central Region game.
Two walks, three singles and a sacrifice fly contributed to the remaining five runs, as well as a stolen base and three free bases coming from passed balls.
“We came out lackadaisical,” Hartz said. “We talked about how we needed to make the basic plays we know how to make. We got down on ourselves and we can’t feel sorry for ourselves, we’ve got to move on to the next play.”
Eight Cowboys runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth rounded out the scoring.
Red Rock totaled just two baserunners; junior catcher Courtney Chalmers singled to right field in the first inning and junior first baseman Ally Alver walked in the fourth.
“We’ve been having good at bats this year, and we just didn’t have good at bats,” Hartz said. “We didn’t swing at balls down the middle and did at balls at eye level.”
