Law enforcement responded to a call of shots fired around 4:15 p.m., Friday, Jan. 5, on State Route 89A at milepost 377 near the Rainbow Trout Farm. According to sources, a female U.S. Forest Service employee was involved in the fatal shooting. The FBI has been called to the scene because the incident happened on federal land.
The FBI, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, Sedona Police Department, Sedona Fire District, Arizona Department of Public Safety and USFS law enforcement all have officers at the scene.
The FBI has reportedly identified the suspect as Tyler Miller, 51, of Hutchinson, Kansas.
The FBI is expected to release details of the shooting Saturday, Jan. 6.
There is no word yet about when the canyon will reopened. City of Sedona officials stated just after 9:30 p.m. that the roadway had reopened.
Drivers heading between Sedona and Flagstaff were advised to detour to State Route 179 and Interstate 17 during the closure.
