Sedona swimming dominates competition

On September. 12. the Sedona swim club competed against Bourgade Catholic High School and Seligman High School at the Sedona Community Pool.

Sedona put on a dominating performance Thursday, placing first in most of the events.

Sedona’s girls accumulated a team score of 71 points, beating out Bourgade Catholic’s score of 42.

On the boy’s side, Sedona dominated Bourgade to the tune of 97 to 13.

“Both the boys and girls won and showed a lot of improvement from our first meet just a few weeks ago,” Sedona coach Dan Morse said. “It was a team effort and everyone played a role in the win.”

Morse singled out players from the boys and girls side for their performances.

“A lot of swimmers performed well including Nyah Valdez, Andrew Tate, Zach Dana, Dezra Dana and Eric Schrader,” Morse said. “We were counting on our more experienced swimmers and they did not disappoint.

Morse stated that the older swimmers have set a great example for the younger swimmers on how to succeed at the varsity level.

“Most of our team are still novices compared to the year-round swimmers but they have learned quickly and competed,” Morse said. “Having the older swimmers around helps the younger ones relax during competitions so they are not overwhelmed.”

Dezra and Nyah led the girls to a win the 200-yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 1:58.34.

The girl’s 50-yard freestyle was a nail-biter Nyah’s 29.71 defeated Bourgade Catholic’s Vivian Hull’s 29.87.

Zach placed first in the boys 100-yard breast with a 1:15.07 and the boys 500-yard freestyle events with a 5:46.19.

Eric won the 100-yard freestyle in 59.69 seconds and the 200-yard freestyle in 2:28.79

Andrew took home first in the Boys 200-yard IM with a 2:24.26.

With the state meet just a month away, Morse believes the team is hitting their stride at the right time.

“For now we are building our conditioning and skills and for the second half of the season so our focus is speed and racing,” Morse said.

Sedona returns to action on Thursday, September. 26 when the Scorpions host Paradise Honors High School and Horizon Honors High School.

“Having a dual meet every week is great because the less experienced swimmers are developing their racing and technical skills,” Morse said. “I believe we should get all of our relays into the state meet, we’re pretty close to qualifying as of now and we are still pretty early in the season.”
