The Tri-Valley Track and Field Championships held at Sedona Red Rock High School on April 28 hosted numerous Verde Valley schools.
In the end, the Big Park Community School track and field team dominated with the girls winning both the fifth- and sixth-grade [65 points] and seventh- and eighth-grade [62 points] divisions while the boys took second in the seventh- and eighth-grade [23 points] division.
“This was a great meet for us. All our kids did well, and it was really cool that our girls won both divisions,” Big Park Head Coach Diane Schumacher said.
Finishing first in the seventh- and eighth-grade boys division was the West Sedona School track and field team, taking the top prize with 25 points scored.
The Wildcats also took first in the fifth- and sixth-grade division with 27 points scored, barely beating out cross-valley rival Camp Verde Middle School, which scored 25 points.
“Our team looked pretty good. It was a good day, and a good meet. It was nice to see all those teams competing well,” West Sedona Head Coach David Hoover said.
Individually for the boys, West Sedona’s Mason Aronson finished second overall in the seventh- and eighth-grade discus event, earning eight points with a 91-foot, 2-inch throw.
In the high jump, Wyatt Stevenson of West Sedona took first overall with a 4-foot, 4-inch leap in the fifth- and sixth-grade division while teammate Richard Convert was second overall in the same event in the seventh- and eighth-grade division with a 5-foot, 4-inch try.
Convert took third in the 100-meter hurdles as well with a 16.48 time.
In the fifth- and sixth-grade 100-meter hurdles, West Sedona’s Francisco Hernandez was second overall with a 19.94 time.
For Big Park, Hunter Wagley was the only boy to take first overall in an event as he took gold in the seventh- and eighth-grade division 400-meter dash with a 58.04 time.
Individually for the girls, Big Park’s Mason Feldtkeller took first overall in the fifth- and sixth-grade division 1,600-meter run with a 6:19.00 time.
Christiana Benites of Big Park won the same event at the seventh- and eighth-grade level, finishing first overall with a 6:24.77 time.
Benites also won the seventh- and eighth-grade division 800-meter run with a 2:55.73 time.
Big Park’s Jessica Kirkham took second overall in the fifth- and sixth-grade division 800-meter run with a 2:54.60 time while Chelsea Heineck took second in the seventh- and eighth-grade division event with a 2:55.97 time.
Kirkham was also second in the long jump with a 11-foot, 7-inch leap while Anna Watson took third overall in the seventh- and eighth-grade division long jump with a 12-foot, 2-inch try.
Kirkham was second in the high jump as well with a 4-foot, 6-inch try.
The Coyotes took first in the fifth- and sixth-grade division 4×400-meter relay event with a 5:12.20 time and the seventh- and eighth-grade grade group took second with a 4:49.60 time.
In the fifth- and sixth-grade division shot put event, Michelle Galvez was third overall with a 22-foot, 1-inch throw while Big Park teammate Emily Bailey was right behind her in fourth with a 20-foot, 10-inch try.
In the discus, the same two were paired again; this time, Bailey took third with a 46-foot, 5-inch throw while Galvez was fourth with a 45-foot, 4-inch throw.
Alicia Craig of Big Park was fifth in the 100-meter dash in the fifth- and sixth-grade grade division with a 15.26 time while Josie Kohlan was sixth overall in the seventh- and eighth-grade division with a 14.70 time.
Craig was also fifth in the 400-meter dash with a 1:14.14 time.
