James Iran Tanis, of Sedona, died Sept. 30.
With advanced degrees in geophysics, he worked for Shell Oil and Conoco during his career, living in Alaska, South America, Europe and Africa. After retiring to Sedona, he was involved with the Sedona Westerners, Search and Rescue, Church of the Red Rocks and the Red Rock Rovers. He co-founded the Bwindi Community Program, a charity helping children in Uganda.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; a stepdaughter, two stepsons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
