There’s a new umpire at Posse Grounds Park this summer, but he isn’t new to the game.
Don McComb, 65, is in his 32nd year umpiring softball games. People may have seen him previously on the field at a Sedona Red Rock High School softball game, but now you can see him in action umpiring the Sedona Summer Softball League, too.
“Umpiring is a hobby to me,” McComb said. “Some people play golf, others fish. I umpire.”
And he isn’t shy on the field.
“Don is has a great attitude,” said John Brown, the SRRHS varsity softball coach. “He is outspoken, loud and when he makes calls, he explains them so coaches can never really argue with him.”
McCombs loves softball, so umpiring games is fun to him. He started his umpiring career in Phoenix in 1980 where he assigned all of the umpires for Arizona State University until the Pac-10 Conference took it over. McCombs was even sponsored by Western Airlines [now Delta Airlines] and was flown all around the country to call games in different states, including Hawaii, Oklahoma, Georgia and even Canada.
