The swim team at Sedona Red Rock High traveled north Tuesday, Oct. 2, to compete against one of the better 4A-II conference programs in the state, Flagstaff High.
Both teams for Sedona were horrendously outnumbered and lost 121-47 [boys] and 125-44 [girls].
"What can you do when a program like Flagstaff can fill every event. We were out- numbered 3-to-1," Sedona head coach Marc Kincaid said.
This was the first meet in three weeks for the Scorpions as Sept. 18 against Bradshaw Mountain High was cancelled and so was the Phoenix Christian High matchup on Sept. 25.
Kincaid says Flagstaff showed a lot of class, was polite and swimmers were true sportsmen in their dominating win.
"Their kids showed a lot of character. Flagstaff has a good program," Kincaid said.
Even though Sedona took a whooping, Kincaid believes his kids have trained hard and have improved throughout the season.
"We have improved in technique, our stroke, our turns and they are beginning to think about swimming, not just doing it," Kincaid said.
For the boys, Josh Gage finished first in the 100 butterfly and second in the 200 individual medley.
Seth Syvertsen placed second overall in the 100 breast stroke and freshman standout Evan Decker placed second in the 500 freestyle.
"We are maturing as a team. The young kids are improving but there are always things to work on," Kincaid said.
As for the girls, Rachel Mendelsohn recorded her best time of the season in the 100 butterfly and finished in first.
Mendelsohn also finished second in the 200 individual medley.
Other standouts were Samantha Juda, finishing second in the 100 freestyle, and Sam Syvertsen, who finished second in the 100 backstroke.
The Scorpions were in action again Thursday, Oct. 4, against Phoenix Christian High in Cottonwood.
Results were not available at press time.
Next up, Sedona will travel to Phoenix Country Day High on Thursday, Oct. 11, in a final tune-up before the state meet.
First swim is at 3 p.m.
