The Scorpions had a tough time keeping up with their Division V opponent’s abrupt offensive speed last Friday night, but they have one more chance to make it into the state playoffs.

The Sedona Red Rock High School Scorpions [5-4] lost the conference match 35-7 to the Williams High School Vikings [8-1] at John Ordean Field on the Scorpions Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 19.

The Scorpions were plagued with no-play status injuries for the game, including senior Connor Kriegel.

“We have mostly sophomores and freshmen out there playing,” said Tony Hauserman, SRRHS assistant coach. “We are essentially playing a [junior varsity] team.”

Scorpions quarterback Keenan Crans was not playing his position due to a knee injury. He did, however, play defense the entire game.

“Crans wasn’t supposed to play at all tonight,” said Rick Walsworth, SRRHS head coach. “He was cleared today. We felt it would be better if he didn’t play quarterback — his knee just didn’t feel good cutting, so we just decided to play him on defense.

“We are very limited on offense without Keenan.”

Sophomore Max Hauserman replaced Crans as quarterback.

The Scorpions defense started the game by holding the Vikings to a fourth-and-7, led by senior linemen Jacob Moore and Zane Saxman.

On the Scorpions’ first possession, Hauserman salvaged a first down from a fourth down situation with a 14-yard run. However, a couple of bad snaps and fumbles recovered by the Scorpions forced them to punt the ball.
