The Big Spank, a ska-influenced rock band from Albuquerque, N.M., are returning to the Verde Valley play two followup shows in Jerome, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12 and 13, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Due to the goodwill and positive buzz the band received at their shows in Sedona and Cottonwood around New Year’s Eve, they were booked to play a pair of gigs at the Spirit Room, the best site for local music in the small mountainside town.

The Big Spank is an original band whose members aptly describe their sound as “funky Latin punkish ska pop.”

While Mike García and Javier Sandoval lead on guitars and vocals, they are backed by drummer Bert Lujan, bassist Chris Tickner and the absolutely necessary trombone of Retzen.

García leads to audience by example, thoroughly enjoying himself whether singing, playing guitar or the accordion.

Although the group composed a number of juvenile songs, often laced with absurd lyrics that poked fun at themselves or their friends, the group stands out for its solid songwriting.
