Scorpions win opener, host Piñon tonight1 min read

The Sedona Red Rock Scorpions football team got their season off to a great start with a resounding 35-6 win over the Paradise Honors Panthers on Friday, Aug. 30, in Surprise.

The Scorpions totaled 333 yards of offense in the game with more than 300 yards of that coming on the ground.

But Scorpions head coach Rick Walsworth said his team came out lackadaisicaly in the first half.

“Part of that had to do with we didn’t know what to expect because we had not been able to trade film with them,” Walsworth said.

“We went in flying blind, so it took us a little while to get up in the first half.”

The Red Rock rushing attack was led by junior Andre Davis, who had 81 yards on just three carries including a 66-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that was the first score in the game.

In all, seven Scorpions players combined for 36 carries including Mason Aronson, 11 carries for 54 yards; Max Hauserman, three carries for 10 yards; Derrick Johnson, seven carries for 51 yards and two touchdowns; Justice Keane, three carries for 24 yards; Brian Nguyen, five carries for 63 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion; and Freddy Rowley, four carries for 15 yards.

Walsworth said that the Scorpions’ game plan is always to get a number of different players involved in the offense, and with four players getting more than 50 yards in the game, they accomplished that.

“That’s how our offense works, is to spread the ball around, and a lot of guys are going to touch the ball,” Walsworth said.
