Volleyball team shakes off early-season issues for win1 min read

Despite a roster full of players either without varsity experience or who haven’t played together before, the Sedona Red Rock volleyball team has carved out a 2-0 start to its season.

The bar is set pretty high for volleyball in Sedona after last year’s state championship, but with only two of the players from that team returning this year, the Scorpions are still in the process of learning their roles and developing that all-important ingredient — chemistry.

In their game at Mingus on Thursday, Sept. 5, the Scorpions displayed both breathtaking talent and bewildering inconsistency on their way to a 3-0 [25-19, 25-21, 26-24] win over the senior-laden Marauders.

“It’s still early-season form for both teams,” Scorpions’ head coach John Parks said. “We really messed up on some of the easy plays tonight, and so we’ve really got to improve on that.”

After an ace by Marauders’ setter Aubrey Tuell to give Mingus a 1-0 lead to start the match, the Scorpions never trailed in either of the first two sets.

But the Marauders took the lead 11-9 midway through the third set on a kill by senior Sarah Cochran, and extended their lead to 17-11 after three more kills by senior outside hitter Angel Chavez.

But a kill by Sedona’s Megan Wzientek followed by an ace by Kendall Woellmer, a kill by Morgan Hawes and a perfectly placed dink shot by Hawes tied the score at 18.
