There’s nothing like a new year to start a new winning streak.

The Sedona Red Rock High School girls basketball team [0-5] could definitely use that fresh start.
After a winless 2013, the Scorpions hope to get back on the winning track in 2014 in their first annual Scorpion Invitational, which SRRHS will host in both of its gymnasiums beginning Thursday, Jan. 2.

The Scorpions, in spite of its twin towers in freshman Sophia Perry and senior Gabby Simon, could only muster 17 points against a tough defense from Valley Christian High School on Dec. 16. Worse, the undefeated Crusaders put up 59 to send SRRHS into winter break licking some wounds.

“We want to reduce our turnovers and make our layups,” Scorpions Head Coach Jackie Strickling said.

The girls hope an opening game in their invitational against Casa Grande High School at 2 p.m. can be the tonic for their first victory, as the Cougars are 5-5 against mostly Division II competition.
