Height may be an advantage, but it’s defense that wins games.

The Sedona Red Rock High School girls basketball team [5-9] is beginning to find that out after taking home the third place plaque from its inaugural Scorpion Invitational on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 4.

Freshman Sophia Perry and senior Gabby Simon were named to the All-Invitational team as post players, but it is her players’ commitment to defense that SRRHS head girls basketball coach Jackie Strickling credited as making the biggest difference in the team’s turnaround from a slow December start.

“We’re playing really strong defense right now,” Strickling said. “We missed a lot of layups and free throws, but we forced teams to make a lot of decisions they didn’t want to make because of our defense.”
