Charles Russell Courtney, 91, of Sedona, died Jan. 23.

He held a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. An English professor, he influenced hundreds of students.

He is survived by his life partner Philip Thompson; daughters Roxane Martinez, Odette Green and Rosine Okie; sons Breton Courtney and Gavin Courtney; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Attendees are asked to wear purple, his favorite color.

A 2008 graduate of Michigan State University, Andrew Pardiac was a Larson Newspapers' copy editor and reporter from October 2013 to October 2017. After moving to Michigan, then California, Pardiac was managing editor of Sonoma West Publishers' four newspapers in Napa and Sonoma valleys until November 2019.
