Waves of adversity have so far all been broken by the girls tennis team at Sedona Red Rock High School.

Playing without their No. 1 singles player, recovering from their No. 4 player’s recent academic ineligibility and adjusting to speed match rules, extreme wind and temperatures, the Scorpions still managed to improve their overall record to 5-3 on Monday, April 7, edging Northland Preparatory Academy in Flagstaff, 5-4.

The win-loss mark represents the best start for the SRRHS girls in head coach Carla Heckrodt’s three-year tenure.

“I think actually these players just [have] a higher degree of team compatibility and, I guess you could say, overall greater team coachability,” she said. “It’s just a different makeup of kids.”

With five matches remaining in the regular season and the girls team currently nine seeds out of contention for the Division III state tennis tournament beginning April 30, any postseason opportunities are going to require a strong extension of the streak, but such a possibility could not even be imagined at this point by the winless 2013 team.

“With how we’re going, I think it’s a definite possibility,” junior Keely Miller said. “Everyone’s getting better every day, each practice, each game and each season, since there are only two seniors on the team.”
