Seniors Emily Aitken and Isaiah Wright punched their state tournament ticket Saturday, Oct. 25, to highlight a fifth-place finish for Sedona Red Rock High School swim teams at the Heisley Invitational in Cottonwood.

Aitken finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:09.08, while Wright swam four-and-a-half seconds faster in the event to finish fourth at the regional championships.

“We had a few more people better their state times, but those were the last two athletes that made it in,” said A. Jay Bronson, SRRHS head swimming coach. “The boys side was incredibly close, all the way around, and I think we accomplished what we wanted as to state times.”

Wright’s time means that six Scorpions swimmers will be swimming for the Division II state championship in individual events Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa. Including the swimmers on all six qualifying relay teams, 10 SRRHS athletes will be competing at the meet.

“Most of the relays is where we are looking,” Bronson said. “I’m really stoked for the upcoming events. It should be a fast meet, and our kids will be ready.”
