Junior Mason Feldtkeller had the first goal followed by an assist on another Friday, Dec. 19, as the Sedona Red Rock High School girls soccer team shut out Lee Williams High School, 4-0.
The Scorpions [2-3] can boost their record to .500 with a win Thursday, Jan. 8, at Glendale Preparatory Academy — their first Division III, Section I opponent of the season.
Senior Adrianna Aviles punched in a crossover shot from the left side of the field following Feldtkeller’s opening score about 20 minutes into the game — a follow of a corner kick.
“The team controlled the match from the start,” said assistant coach Will Geurts, whose daughter Jasmine, a junior, also recorded an assist against the Volunteers. “The majority of the game was played in the opposition’s half as the girls continued to apply pressure.”
All four Scorpions goals came in the first half, with sophomore Malia Sonn capping the scoring with a strong rebound kick off her own miss. Although they did not score in the second half, the Scorpions’ defense kept the lid on the Volunteers for the entire 40 minutes.
“As a team, we’re very defense-strong,” said senior defender Sadie Foley, whose first-half free kick deflected off the left goalpost into the net for the third Scorpions goal. “I usually take free kicks. I’m working on getting the ball high and sending it out.”
The girls will have both training and practice off until Monday, Jan. 5. The focus in subsequent practices will be on set plays and finishing prior to their first sectional matchup at the Griffins.
