Strikers Jose Aviles-Moya and Francisco Hernandez evenly distributed two goals over both halves as the Sedona Red Rock High School boys soccer team built a two-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory at Joy Christian High School in Glendale.

“This is the most unified team I’ve ever had,” head coach Cindy Hauserman said. “We all want to play for each other and fight for each other. Something has just clicked.”

The Scorpions [2-0] won their first Division III, Section I game of the season with the three-goal road win over the Eagles.

“We played better in the second half, actually,” Hauserman said. “We had an accidental trip in the box, so they scored one on a [penalty kick]. Otherwise, it was a pretty even, good effort.”

The dynamic duo of Aviles-Moya, a senior, and Hernandez, a junior — known simply as “Josie” and “Paco” to their coaches, friends and teammates — have allowed Hauserman to use a more aggressive formation employed successfully by only the best of the international professional teams, the 4-4-2.

“It’s funny, because most of my soccer career I have not used a 4-4-2,” she said. “When I first got interviewed for this job, [SRRHS Principal] Darrin Karuzas was quiet for most of the interview, but at the end, he asked, ‘Are you going to use the 4-4-2?’

“He’s a Manchester United fan — he loves that formation. I looked at him said, ‘The day I’ve got twin strikers, I’ll use it.’

“Well, guess what? I’ve got Paco and Josie up front and they’re just killing it.”
