Neither rain, nor snow, nor dubious officiating could keep the boys soccer team at Sedona Red Rock High School from extending its winning streak to four games Saturday, Jan. 10.
“We are a determined team,” said Cindy Hauserman, Scorpions head boys soccer coach. “We know that success comes with sweat, skill, good decisions and discipline.”
Senior striker Jose Aviles-Moya completed his hat trick against Fountain Hills High School off the assist from junior midfielder Jerson Mendoza-Jimenez, who battled the ball through the Falcons back line of defense to add a goal of his own as the Scorpions handled Fountain Hills High School in a storm of rain and controversial calls by the game officials, 4-2.
“Things can get ‘chippy’ if calls are made that feel unjust to players on both sides,” Hauserman said. “Add some cold rain to the mix and the potential increases for tempers to flare.”
Junior striker Francisco “Paco” Hernandez and freshman Brian Burke also fed Aviles-Moya, the fourth-leading goal scorer in Section I of Division III, for goals as the Scorpions remained atop the section going into games with their closest competitors Wednesday and Saturday, Jan. 14 and 17.
“The upcoming game is hard to predict,” Hauserman said. “Hats off to Fountain Hills. They are a good team, well-coached, [with] decent young men.”
SRRHS will follow a Jan. 14 visit to third-place Northwest Christian High School, 4-1 in sectional play, with a home game against Mingus Union High School at 1 p.m. Jan. 17.
