Sedona Red Rock High School recovered from an 11-point loss at its cross-Verde Valley rival to stay in the hunt for a postseason playoff berth with a 10-point sectional road win of its own Saturday, Jan. 17.
“I think we can make it to State, for sure,” said freshman guard Liza Westervelt, who moved into the starting point guard spot in the absence of junior point guard Annie Parrella, who was attending a school leadership conference. “We have a new coach, and we’ve come together really well as a team. We’ve gotten better by a lot.”
Sophomore Madison Ninneman slid into Westervelt’s shooting guard spot and, along with junior Sophia Perry, sophomore Hannah Ringel and seniors Kristina Schindele and Marisa Carrara off the bench, stepped up the defensive effort and limited Fountain Hills High School to 22 points Jan. 17.
“I think our posts did really well — Hannah, Sophia, Marisa, even Kristina,” Westervelt said. “They did a really good job of stopping the big girl for Fountain Hills.”
Defense has been the name of the game for the Scorpions — specifically, a three-quarter-court press — and it yielded better results Jan. 17 than in a 43-32 loss at Camp Verde High School.
