Sedona Fire District names Dave Soto chairman

There’s been a changing of the guard on the Sedona Fire District’s Governing Board.

During the April 18 meeting, Chairman Ty Montgomery announced that after eight years on the board he will not be running for a third term this November. He also decided that it was best for the board to elect a new chairman.

In a unanimous vote, Dave Soto was chosen for that position, while Corrie Cooperman, who was reappointed to the board after stepping down earlier this year, was again named clerk. They will assume those positions beginning with the May board meeting.

“It’s time to move on and I’ll leave it at that,” Montgomery said, noting that he will remain on the board until after the election. “I have other things to do and other opportunities. I think there are other people who can bring new ideas to the board.”

He said with three openings on the board this fall, he felt it was important to give someone else experience as chairman prior to the election.

“I’ve really appreciated you as chair and the levelheadedness you bring to the position,” Cooperman said.

Soto concurred and said, “Ty, I want to thank you for all the time and effort you put into the position and the wisdom you’ve brought. We truly appreciate it.”

In regard to becoming chairman, Soto added, “Thank you for your consideration regarding this position — I will accept it.”

The board also approved changing the monthly meetings from the third Wednesday of the month to the third Tuesday of the month beginning in May. This is due to a scheduling conflict with board attorney Bill Whittington.
