Some of his fans might see him as an actor who sings, while others may see him as a singer who acts. Either way, Jared Leto has found plenty of success in both.
On the acting side, Leto is best known for his roles in “Suicide Squad,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Requiem for a Dream” and his Oscarwinning performance in “Dallas Buyers Club.” On the music side, he’s known as the lead singer of the multiplatinum-selling band Thirty Seconds to Mars, which formed 20 years ago.
On Thursday, April 5, Leto put his music skills on display during a special event promoting the band’s newest album titled “America,” which was officially released the following day. He performed a handful of the band’s biggest songs including “Rescue Me” and “Kings and Queens” — all by requests from the audience — at an outdoor venue at Enchantment Resort.
A Phoenix-area radio station held a contest with winners being invited to meet and hear Leto at the resort. About 30 in all were chosen and were bused up, but were only told they were going to Sedona and little else.
It was the final stop during Leto’s weeklong journey across the country in anticipation of the group’s new album. He began the trek in New York City on Monday, April 2, and traveled via plane, train, automobile and hitchhiking on his way to Los Angeles, visiting several cities along the way.
“This is really weird — there’s like seven people here for a concert,” he said, laughing, as he got to the mic.
During his songs he was joined by only an acoustic guitarist, and between songs he shared stories of the band and said just the week prior they were on tour in Europe and Japan. He also mentioned that the band will be performing July 22 at the Ak-Chin Pavilion in Phoenix as part of their United States tour.
“What kind of booking agent puts you on stage in Phoenix in July?” he joked. “Thirty Seconds to Mars will do it, they’ll play anywhere. We played in Phoenix several years ago and filmed scenes for our video ‘Close to the Edge.’ I remember there was one of the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen.”
After singing several songs, Leto asked if anyone wanted a photo. As everyone in the audience raised their hands he asked them to form a single line and have their camera on selfie mode. He then took pictures with each person.
“Enjoy this magical place — it’s now onward with the journey,” he said as he walked away.
